ICC World Cup 2019: BCCI to disallow Team India WAGs for the first 20 days
The players would be travelling together on the team bus and not with their partners.
After the gruelling Indian Premier League (IPL), Team Indian players will head to England and Wales for the upcoming World Cup set to start on Thursday, May 30. The Men in Blue are the two-time champions and even this time around, they are deemed as one of the favourites. In the meantime, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also planning for the mega event.
The world’s cricket board has formed a rule where the WAGs of the Indian team’s players won’t be allowed for the first 20 days of the mega event. However, their families can come over after the completion of the period. Earlier, Indian captain Virat Kohli also sought permission from the board, but now he too is in agreement with the new policy for the World Cup.
“The top team management has discussed about this 15-day provision and are on the same page on this arrangement,” an official for the BCCI was quoted as saying in India Today.
More insights into the development
The Indian team would be travelling for the tournament on May 22 and would’ve finished playing two of their league games before the WAGs can join. It has also been decided that the partners wouldn’t be travelling on a team bus. Rather, they would have a separate bus or a private transport. The players would be travelling together on the team bus and not with their partners.
More than half of the Indian team’s players are married and the WAGs have been travelling with the players on overseas tours as per the BCCI’s past rules. As far as partners are concerned, Virat has often been seen with his wife Anushka Sharma, a Bollywood actress, on overseas tours.
In the World Cup, India are set to play their first match against South Africa on Wednesday, June 5 at the Kennington Oval in London.
