ICC World Cup 2019: Kagiso Rabada set to be fit for the mega event, Dale Steyn doubtful
Ngidi and Steyn's participation remain under the clouds.
Kagiso Rabada has been spearheading the South African bowling attack for a couple of years now and he hasn’t disappointed. Recently, he played for the Delhi Capitals (DC) and got 25 wickets in 12 matches. However, he couldn’t play the entire tournament as Cricket South Africa (CSA) pulled him out as a precautionary measure after he complained of a stiff back.
Nevertheless, he is now expected to return for the World Cup, scheduled to start May 30. The Proteas will play England in the tournament opener and the speedster is expected to be fit in time. Recently, Mohammed Moosajee, the team doctor, shared an update on Rabada’s injury. He sounded hopeful that their premier pacer will make the cut for the 50-overs tournament.
“With KG (Rabada)‚ we are extra cautious because of two reasons. The anticipated recovery period for KG’s injury is two to three weeks and we are hopeful he’ll make a full recovery to be part of the World Cup squad,” Moosajee was quoted as saying in Cricket South Africa’s official website.
“He had a back issue that kept him out of the game for a protracted amount of time. Secondly‚ there’s his importance in the squad‚ so we’re managing his rehab and his return to play very carefully,” he mentioned.
No clarity on Steyn and Ngidi
However, there’s no clarity on when Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi would attain the desired level of fitness. Moosajee said that there are enough players on standby if they don’t get fit. Steyn and Ngidi are recovering from a shoulder injury and side sprain respectively.
“The selectors have ensured they have enough options on the table but there are some players that have been earmarked as standby players,” he remarked.
Before the commencement of the main round of the World Cup, the Faf du Plessis-captained team will play two warm-up contests against Sri Lanka and Windies respectively.
