ICC World Cup 2019: Kevin Pietersen names the favourites for the tournament
KP also said that the quality of cricketers has dropped down in the last few years.
Kevin Pietersen is currently in South Africa shooting for his documentary. The documentary aims to look at the career of the former England cricketer. Amidst all that, the controversial former England captain has shared his views on the team that has the best chance of landing with the title in the World Cup 2019 that will be hosted in his home country England.
He believes that not just cricket but the weather will also play a crucial role in deciding the outcome of the tournament. He further added that if the sun is out, the tournament will be an even contest. But if the weather is cloudy for the major part of the event, it will aid swing. In that case, it will be very difficult for other teams to stop England from winning the World Cup for the first time in history.
“It’s going to be very weather conducive, so whoever deals with the weather I think is going to win the World Cup, If it’s a beautiful summer, it opens it up a lot to all the different teams, but if it’s overcast, cloudy and the ball starts to swing and seam, then England are definitely front-runners,” Pietersen was quoted by sport24
Pietersen laments lack of quality these days
The former England batsman admitted that quality of cricket has gone down in the last few years. He argued that the quality was much better only a few years ago.
“I think the world of cricket is actually suffering. I’ve done an interview recently, I don’t think the standard is what it used to be and I’m only talking six, seven, eight or nine years ago,” he added.
Pietersen further argued that Virat Kohli is the only global superstar in cricket these days. He mentioned the name of some world-class cricketers who played a decade ago, lamenting that the current crop can’t match their quality.
“The standard was magnificent then with guys like (Kumar) Sangakkara, (Brett) Lee, Chris Gayle, (Dwayne) Bravo, Brian Lara and all these other great players. I don’t see many of them around anymore, Virat Kohli is probably the only global superstar in cricket right now. Ten years ago, there were great Australians that we used to play against, such as (Ricky) Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne and all those guys. I mean, the world of cricket is suffering,” KP stated.
