India fell 31 runs short of Australia’s total despite Rohit Sharma fighting out with his 25th century in the ODI format. Rohit got off to a slow start on a pitch that began to grip a bit. He added 138 runs with Virat Kohli for the 2nd wicket and 52 more with Rishabh Pant for the 3rd wicket. For once, Rohit couldn’t convert his century into a big one as he got out very soon. He finished with a 109-ball 102 which contained 15 fours but no sixes before getting out in the 38th over; the first ODI hundred for Rohit without hitting a six.

Here are all the stats and numbers recorded with his century against England on Sunday:

1 – Rohit Sharma is the first Indian to score two centuries while chasing in the World Cup. Overall, he is the 7th player with multiple tons in CWC chases. Kumar Sangakkara in 2015, Joe Root and Shakib Al Hasan in 2019 are only other players with multiple tons while chasing in the same World Cup edition.

2 – Rohit scored his 2nd century in an ODI against England in England. He is the first Indian with multiple ODI tons against the English team in their own backyard. Four Indians scored an ODI century each against England in England before Rohit.

3 – Number of centuries for Rohit Sharma in this tournament; the 5th player with as many as three tons in a single World Cup edition. Mark Waugh in 1996, Sourav Ganguly in 2003, Matthew Hayden in 2007 and Kumar Sangakkara (4) in 2015 were the other four players. Only Rohit, Hayden and Sangakkara had three tons against full member countries in an edition.

3 – Rohit now has three centuries while chasing in ICC ODI tournaments (CWC and CT); the 4th such player and the first from India. Kumar Sangakkara, Joe Root and Shakib Al Hasan are the other three players with three centuries during chases in ICC ODI tournaments.

4 – Rohit now has four centuries while chasing a target of 300+ in ODI cricket; the joint 3rd most by any player. Virat Kohli leads the list with nine such hundreds while Jason Roy has five. Kumar Sangakkara and Joe Root also have four tons apiece while chasing 300+ in ODIs.

102 – Rohit’s 102-run knock is the highest individual score in an unsuccessful World Cup chase for India. Ajay Jadeja scored an unbeaten 100 against Australia in the 1999 CWC game. These two are the only centuries by Indians in unsuccessful CWC chases.

206 – Innings Rohit needed for scoring his 25th century in ODI format; the 3rd fewest by any player. Only Hashim Amla (151) and Virat Kohli (162) had their 25th ODI ton earlier than Rohit.

343 – Rohit is now the leading run-getter in ODIs at the Edgbaston in Birmingham as he scored 343 runs in only five innings with two tons and a fifty. He is currently tied with Andrew Strauss who also scored 343 runs but from six ODI innings.
