After their stutter against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Eoin Morgan’s England was able to make a stupendous comeback, beating Bangladesh by 106 runs in Cardiff. Placed third in the points table, the Three Lions still have a fair amount of work to do in order to progress to the semis. The Brits are next scheduled to lock horns with Windies on June 14 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

The Caribbean team, on the other hand, rolled over Pakistan but got beaten by Australia. To add insult to injury, their last match versus South Africa was called off due to heavy rain. As far as their head-to-head record in the World Cup is concerned, the Brits have a 5-1 lead over the Windies, having last lost a game way back in 1979. Moreover, the Windies are yet to beat England in an ODI at the Rose Bowl.

Weather Report

Another day where rain is expected to dominate the proceedings. The chances of a downpour will be on the higher side from the morning at 9 AM to the evening at 7 PM. During game time, the sun is unlikely to make its way. The temperature during the encounter will be between 15 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius. The humidity will be in the 60s and 70s.

Pitch Report

The track in Southampton has helped the fast bowlers to a large extent. In both the previous games, the pacers made early breakthroughs with the new leather. Under overcast conditions, the speedsters may again come into play. Hence, it won’t be a surprise if the teams opt to field first after winning the toss. Batsmen will be better off if they don’t attempt something ambitious early on.

Playing combinations

England

Moeen Ali missed the last game as he was on ‘paternal leave’ because of the birth of his daughter. He will be available for the next encounter. His return will also mean that their batting will be strengthened. In case he plays, then the axe may come down on pacer Chris Woakes. Jason Roy has arguably been the Brits’ best bet with the bat, having scored 215 runs with the top score of 153.

Jonny Bairstow notched a half-century in the previous game versus Bangladesh but is yet to come into his own. Mark Wood has done well and he’ll be persisted with. Bearing in mind the bowling-friendly conditions, Jofra Archer’s prowess to generate pace and bounce off the track can come in handy as well. Jos Buttler has recovered from the hip injury and he’s likely to make the cut.

Probable XI

Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (C), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Windies

West Indies are likely to bring in Andre Russell, who didn’t play the last match due to injury. In that scenario, Darren Bravo is the most likely candidate to be left out. Evin Lewis may have to warm the bench again even after returning from a hand injury. There will be more responsibility on Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer, both of whom may bat at three and four respectively.

Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell have been outstanding with the ball and have picked up early wickets. Kemar Roach can also crank up the pace and hurry batsmen on a consistent basis. Captain Holder averages 51 in the mega event with a half-century versus the Aussies. He has picked up four wickets as well. Carlos Brathwaite and Ashley also need to step up and deliver.

Probable XI

Chris Gayle, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (C), Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas

Probable Top Performer

Jonny Bairstow – England | Sheldon Cottrell – Windies
