High-flying England will have a chance of moving to the top of the points table when they take on struggling Sri Lanka at Headingley in Leeds in the 27th match of the World Cup 2019. Hosts England are comfortably placed at the third spot in the points table with 4 wins from 5 games. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have managed just one win from five games and reeling at the sixth spot.

England come into this game on the back of the mammoth 150-run win over bottom-ranked Afghanistan. Led by their influential captain Eoin Morgan, England thoroughly outplayed Afghanistan. Morgan scored his career-best 148 including world-record 17 sixes as England posted a mammoth total of 397 for 6 – the highest score of this World Cup. Apart from Morgan, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root impressed with the bat too, scoring fifties.

In reply, Afghanistan finished with a modest 247 for 8 to suffer their fifth defeat in as many games. Fast bowler Jofra Archer and spinner Adil Rashid made their marks with the ball, picking up three wickets apiece.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, lost to defending champions Australia in their last outing. Australia skipper Aaron Finch’s 153 helped Australia pile on 334/7 at The Oval. In reply, Sri Lanka got off to a flying start as captain Dimuth Karunaratne made 97 and Kusal Perera 52. The two added 115 runs for the first wicket. However, once the opening stand was broken, Sri Lanka’s chase derailed.

Mitchell Starch picked up four wickets while Kane Richardson picked up three as Australia bowled out Sri Lanka for 247. A defeat against England will more or less end Sri Lanka’s slim hopes of making it to the last four.

How’s the weather expected to be:
