ICC World Cup 2019: Match 41, England vs New Zealand – Opening pair’s wonders, Bairstow’s record ton and more stats
All the statistical highlights from England’s huge 119-run win against New Zealand.
England joined Australia and India to seal their semi-final spot in the World Cup 2019 as they thumped New Zealand by a 119-run margin. Jonny Bairstow scored his second century in four days as he struck 106 from only 99 balls. From 194/1 after 30 overs, the home had to settle down with only 305/8. However, the total was more than enough for England to defend as New Zealand kept losing wickets from the very first over. Runouts of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor in the space of ten deliveries confirmed the Kiwi defeat.
All the statistical highlights from England’s huge 119-run win against New Zealand:
A remarkable tournament for England:
1992 – For the first time since 1992, England has qualified for the semi-final of a World Cup. They made it to semis in all the first five editions but never in the previous six editions of the CWC.
6 – England has won six of the nine matches they played thus far; the joint-most number of wins for them in a single edition of World Cup. England won six games during the 1992 edition as well including one win in the semi-final.
6 – England now has posted 300+ on six occasions in this World Cup; the first-ever team with six or more 300+ totals in an ODI series/tournament. Australia had five scores of 300+ in the 2007 edition and also five against India in the 2013 away series.
The record-breaking pair:
1 – Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy pair became the first opening pair to share three straight 100-run partnerships in World Cup. They are the 2nd pair to put on a hat-trick of century stands for any wicket in the World Cup. Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan pair had three consecutive 100+ stands during the previous edition.
2099 – Bairstow and Roy became the first England pair and overall the 19th pair to share 2000 runs for the opening wicket in ODIs. The pair scored their 2000th run in the 31st innings; the fewest innings for this milestone. Sri Lankan pair of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga completed 2000 ODI runs as an opening pair in 32nd ODI innings only.
Bairstow betters Dravid:
462 – Jonny Bairstow’s 462 runs in this tournament are the most by any player in the debut World Cup edition. The England opener surpassed Rahul Dravid’s 461 runs scored during the CWC 1999. Earlier this year, Bairstow scored 445 runs in the IPL which are the most by a player in a debut IPL season since 2009.
1 – Bairstow is now the first player from England to score back to back World Cup hundreds. Kevin Pietersen (2) and Joe Root (3) are the only players to ever score more than one century in CWC for England.
Jofra and Root set England records:
17 – Number of wickets for Jofra Archer in this tournament; the most by a player for England in a World Cup edition. He went past Ian Botham’s tally of 16 wickets from ten matches in 1992. Mark Wood also has 16 wickets from 8 games in the going tournament.
500 – Joe Root has 500 runs in the ongoing World Cup; the first England player with 500 runs in a single edition of CWC. The previous highest by an England player in a CWC was 471 runs by Graham Gooch in 1987.
Boult moves on to the top:
37 – Trent Boult has picked up 37 wickets from 17 World Cup matches; the most by any player for New Zealand in World Cup. Boult went past Jacob Oram and Daniel Vettori who shared the top spot before the left-arm pacer.
End of a record streak:
27 – Runs Kane Williamson scored in this game before getting run out at the non-striker’s end. This was the first time in his previous 16 ODI innings in England that Williamson failed to score 40 runs. His record of 40+ scores in 15 consecutive ODI innings in England is unmatched as no other player has even ten successive ODI innings of 40+ runs in a country.
