Iconic Eden Gardens most likely to host India-Afghanistan Test match
The match was confirmed by BCCI on Monday.
Afghanistan is all set to play against India in their first ever Test match in 2018 and Eden Gardens is the most likely venue for the historic game. The war-torn country confirmed their clash in the longest format of the game with the current number 1 team in the World on Monday. Even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the same after the conclusion of the SGM held in the capital city Delhi. However, Afghanistan fans must be surely elated with the news as Eden Gardens is touted as one of the historic venues in India.
Afghanistan and Ireland were awarded the Test status earlier this year for their continuous improvement in the format in the ICC Intercontinental Cup. The former country has improved leaps and bounds as they hit the international scene only a few years ago but are immensely passionate about the sport. Also, BCCI has played a huge role in their upbringing by providing them with a cricket ground in Noida for training.
ACB and Amitabh Choudhary confirmed the match
India will play Afghanistan in Kolkata at the historic Eden Gardens according to the reports in mid-day.com. The news of the clash was confirmed by the acting secretary of BCCI Amitabh Choudhary after the meeting. “Afghans were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 versus Australia but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test,” he told reporters.
Even the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) expressed its delight and thanked the Indian board for welcoming them to Test cricket. Interestingly, most of the Afghanistan cricketers idolise Indian players and had wished to play their first game in whites against India itself and now their wish will be fulfilled. They would be eagerly waiting for the moment when they will lock horns with them in the iconic Stadium
