Simon James Arnold Taufel was the youngest member to be inducted into the Elite Panel of Umpires by the ICC. Taufel was just 27 years old when he made his umpiring debut in an ODI between Ausralia and Sri Lanka.

Taufel played for Cammeray Cricket Club in the Northern Suburbs Cricket Association as a fast-medium bowler. After the 1990–1991 season he won the club’s best and fairest award, was leading wicket-taker and had the lowest bowling average in the association but his career was cut short by a back injury.

Though he had no intentions of becoming an Umpire as a young boy, Taufel ended up being the top Umpire for five consecutive years from 2004 to 2008. He garnered immense respect among players and viewers all over the world thanks to his accuracy. He retired in 2012 and took up the role of umpire performance and training manager with the ICC.
