'If we get infected so be it' - Megan Schutt on playing alongside Covid-hit Tahlia McGrath
ICC had approved McGrath participation for the final match.
Mighty Australia scripted history after winning the gold medal in the cricket competition of the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG). However, all the limelight is being grabbed by the Aussie all-rounder Tahlia McGrath who despite testing Covid-19 positive played against India in the final match.
Meanwhile, another Australian player, pacer Megan Schutt, has now said that her team was happy to play alongside McGrath. It must be noted that McGrath had mild Covid-19 symptoms just ahead of the final match, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved her participation.
We felt bad for Tahila: Megan Schutt
“We were all happy to play, she was happy to play,” Schutt said as quoted by The Guardian. “She feels absolutely fine so I think the positive result was a bit of a shock to her, but that’s Covid isn’t it we’re all going to live through it.”
“We didn’t want to get in trouble, we felt bad for Tahlia at the end there. Obviously, when you’re part of a game that’s so thrilling like that, that’s all you want to do [is celebrate] and at the end screw it, if we get Covid, so be it,” she added.
Talking about final game, Australia after batting first, scored 161 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Beth Mooney was excellent with the bat as she scored 61 off 41 balls hitting eight boundaries in the process. Skipper Meg Lanning also played well for her 30+ score.
In reply, Team India had a poor start with the bat as they lost their both openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma within the field restrictions. However, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur played an outstanding knock of 65 runs and ensured that her team remains in the game. At one stage it was looking like the Women in Blue will win the contest, but a late comeback from Australia ensured that India was restricted to just 152/10 in 19.3 overs and lost the match by nine runs and settle for a silver medal.
