'If you look at my last 10-15 Tests, you will find some runs there' - Ajinkya Rahane on his current dismal form
Rahane has managed just 779 runs averaging 29.96 in 18 matches with a single hundred and 6 fifty-plus scores under Kohli’s leadership in India.
India had to face an embarrassing defeat against England by a massive 227 runs in the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This resulted in the players getting brutally trolled on social media for their poor performance in the home conditions and jeopardizing the chances of India making it to the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship at Lord’s against New Zealand.
India’s limited-overs vice-captain in the purest format of the game Ajinkya Rahane was also subjected to hate and criticism for his poor performance in the first Test against England. Rahane wasn’t at his fluent best throughout the game as he registered poor scores of 1 and 0 runs across two innings.
Rahane was also lambasted on social media for not showing consistency and carrying his good form with the willow across the matches. The 32-year-old had hammered a scintillating century in the second Test against Australia but since then has failed to register a single 50+ score across seven innings played.
Speaking about his poor form with the willow in the press conference ahead of the second Test on Saturday, Rahane stated in a virtual press conference, “We are playing at home after two years. It’s all about the team, not about any individual. If you look at my last 10-15 Tests, you will find some runs there.”
Ajinkya Rahane is our most important Test batsman: Virat Kohli
After the first Test, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli had also backed Ajinkya Rahane saying that he is an impact player and is as important for the Indian team in Tests as Cheteshwar Pujara. Rahane has managed just 779 runs at 29.96 in 18 matches with a single hundred and 6 fifty-plus scores under Kohli’s leadership in India.
“Ajinkya and I’ve said this many times in the past as well, that along with Pujara, he is our most important Test batsman and he’s going to continue to be. We believe in his abilities; we have believed in his abilities for a long time. He’s an impact player. If you talk about the MCG Test, he stood up and scored a hundred there when the team wanted it most,” the Indian skipper had said during the press conference on Tuesday on being asked about Ajinkya Rahane’s poor scores in the Chepauk Test.
