I’m confident that MS Dhoni will lead CSK in IPL 2021, says CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan
Dhoni has come under the cosh for CSK's poor run in IPL 2020.
Since the day MS Dhoni retired from international cricket, his IPL retirement has been majorly speculated. He turned up for his franchise Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 but his team’s early elimination didn’t help his cause either. It is the first time CSK haven’t qualified for the playoffs and several decisions made by Dhoni have been questioned.
There has been a social media outrage, asking him to hang his boots but the wicketkeeper hasn’t responded to the speculations at all. When asked about his team’s plan for the next year, Dhoni hinted that they are hoping for a mega auction to happen so that they can change their combination completely. However, now CEO of CSK, Kasi Viswanathan has responded on the speculation.
In an interview with The Times of India (TOI), on being asked whether or not Dhoni will continue as their skipper he said, “Yes definitely I’m very confident that Dhoni will lead CSK in 2021. He has won three titles for us in the IPL. This is the 1st year we have not qualified for the playoffs, no other team has done that.”
CSK have always been confident about their skipper’s credentials. Under Dhoni, CSK have clinched the trophy thrice. They were the only team that had qualified for the playoffs every single time before the ongoing season. As Dhoni would be continuing as their skipper, other major changes can be expected in their squad if the mega auction happens next year.
MS Dhoni and Co’s forgettable run in IPL 2020
IPL 2020 has been a forgettable season for CSK as they became the first team to get eliminated from the competition. The team management has been criticised for backing their overaged players and not giving enough games to youngsters. There have been several mistakes on the field and CSK looked a mere shadow of the team that reached the final twice in the last two years.
They have won only four out of their 12 games and are placed on the bottom of the points table. Senior players like Dhoni, Shane Watson and Ravindra Jadeja have been bashed for their dismal form as well. The only bright prospect for them has been the performance of Sam Curran as the 22-year-old has performed brilliantly with both bat and ball.
