The 2018 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is scheduled to get underway on September 15. Among the five direct entrants, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have already announced their squads. Meanwhile, Pakistan are yet to announce their squad for the multi-nation tournament. Pakistan are scheduled to play their first match against the qualifier on September 16 in Dubai.
In the meantime, their all-rounder Imad Wasim has failed in the yo-yo test. Staying fit has become paramount in order for cricketers to sustain the rigours of the sport and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a bid to ensure that the players aren’t devoid of fitness, has set the benchmark as 17.4. Unfortunately, the Glamorgan-born cricketer missed the mark by a slender margin of 0.2.
Wasim to get another opportunity
The 29-year-old will now undergo another fitness test tomorrow as per reports in Sport 360. On Monday, 18 cricketers of the national team attended a fitness camp in Lahore out of which 17 passed the test. The yo-yo test has been a talking point across a number of countries. In India, the benchmark is lower than Pakistan, 16.1, yet a number of their players have failed in the test.
The standards of fitness in countries in England and New Zealand are higher as their respective cricket boards have set higher numbers, 19, as a qualification criterion. With not even a couple of weeks left for the Asia Cup, Wasim would be desperate to pass the test and keep himself in contention for a berth in the national team.
Wasim recently played for the Jamaica Tallawahs, captained by Andre Russell in the Caribbean Premier League. He made seven appearances in which he picked up six wickets. Moreover, he was their most economical bowler with an economy rate of 6.74. His best figures of 2/17 came against Dwayne Bravo-led Trinbago Knight Riders.
