IND vs SL: Shreyas Iyer's 92 features in list of unwanted record held by Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag

India found themselves in a spot of bother having lost half their side early after winning the toss on Day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Having been reduced to 148/6, the hosts could have been bundled out cheaply had it not been for Shreyas Iyer’s vital half-century that helped them in crossing the 250-run mark.

The middle-order sensation made it matter yet again just like he had during the three WI T20Is that preceded the Test series. Iyer scored 92 runs off 98 deliveries.  While he did reach his fifty with a splendid six, the Mumbai cricketer also went on to create an unwanted record as he joined two of India and world cricket’s batting megastars after falling eight short of a deserving century.

Shreyas Iyer creates an unimpressive record despite playing a match-defining knock

After being stumped by Niroshan Dickwella off left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama for 92, Shreyas Iyer ended up creating an unwanted record held by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and his former opening partner Virender Sehwag. In fact, he became the fourth batter to be stumped while batting in the 90s.

Sachin was stumped on 90 during a Test match against Nasser Hussain’s England at the same venue in 2001 while Sehwag was dismissed in this manner for a painful 99 in the 2010 Colombo Test against Sri Lanka. The first batter was Dilip Vengsarkar who lost his wicket for 96 during the Chennai Test match against arch-rivals Pakistan in 1987.

Coming back to the contest, Iyer’s knock propelled India to a competitive total of 252. His innings included 10 boundaries and six maximums as the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals. In reply, Sri Lanka were reduced to 14/3 having lost their top three batters including skipper Dimuth Karunaratne. It was just a matter of time before the visitors lost half their side on a difficult batting surface. It was not enough that they lost three more wickets before the day’s stumps as they folded the day on 86/6.
