IND vs WI: West Indies players and support staff test negative upon arrival in Ahmedabad
Three players, Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Gaikwad tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday evening.
Team India is set to face the West Indies in the three-match ODI series starting from February at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. But on Wednesday (February 2) evening, news broke out that seven members of the Indian contingent including three players tested positive for COVID-19. Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer have contracted the virus among the players and are unlikely to feature in the ODI series now.
Meanwhile, West Indies players also arrived in Ahmedabad only a couple of days after their stunning series win over England back home. They are undergoing mandatory isolation in their hotel rooms at the moment. However, there are no concerns in their camp as every member of the visiting contingent tested negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.
A Cricket West Indies (CWI) official confirmed that there were no COVID cases within their camp and all had tested negative before leaving Barbados as well. “We were all negative before we left Barbados. And all negative on our arrival tests at the airport yesterday in Ahmedabad. We are in room isolation on a separate floor to the Indian team as per the protocols,” the official said while speaking to Cricbuzz.
India and West Indies staying in the same hotel
Both teams are staying in the same hotel Hyatt Regency at the moment with the West Indies players isolating on a different floor. Apart from three players, T Dilip (Fielding Coach), B Lokesh (Security Liaison Officer) and Rajeev Kumar (Massage Therapist) have also been tested positive along with the standby cricketer Navdeep Saini.
All of them have been moved to a separate floor and are following required COVID guidelines while the BCCI medical team is also closely observing them. Meanwhile, team India was supposed to start their practice session on February 3 but it seems, the players will have to isolate for some more period. As of now, there is no threat to the series with India also calling up Mayank Agarwal to the ODI squad.
