On Sunday (4th June) we witnessed another one-sided clash where India managed to upstage Pakistan by 124 runs and announcing themselves in ‘mini-World Cup’. However, everything seems to be not falling in right place for Pakistan. They not only played like a number 8 team but have also made it difficult to get back in this tournament after losing by a hefty margin.
For India, it was Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma who provided a dream start and were able to set a tone for coming batsman. With an explosive inning by Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli in the end, India posted a mammoth total of 324 runs on the board.
Things became all the more difficult for Pakistan when the rain played spoilsport. They were asked to chase down a total at seven and a half runs per over. Lethal bowling attack helped India to take a one sided victory. However, Pakistan faced calls for a total overhaul on Monday after slumping to a “shameful defeat”.
Defeat against India disheartened Pakistanis
Pakistan media had no answers to rejoice of Indian Media who went on saying it as “Mother of all Mismatches”.
Pakistan’s highest circulated newspaper, Jang said, “Pakistan suffers shameful defeat at the hands of India in Champions Trophy, Green Shirts fail in every department.”
Even the former Pakistani skipper, Shahid Afridi was disheartened by the performance shown by Pakistan against the arch-rivals.
“The gap between Indian and Pakistani teams is bigger than ever! India has evolved & we are way behind now. We need to overhaul approach, mindset & work on improving our stagnating skills and play with clear minds,” he (Shahid Afridi) said on his Twitter account.
Even when the media termed it as a ‘much anticipated’ match, the records speak that India is way over Pakistan when it comes to ICC tournaments. Team India has never lost a World Cup match against Pakistan and before 2013 Champions Trophy (CT), Pakistan had a two nil lead against India in CT but that has been equalized by India with two one sided wins.
Indian Newspapers
Indian Newspapers had their way to be delighted over scintillating victory. Headlines in some of the esteemed newspapers were, “Opening Statement”, “India knocks the stuffing out of Pakistan”, “anything but competitive”, “India’s batsmen pounded Pakistan into the ground”.
