India v England 5th Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights

Shortly after England won their 4th toss in the series and elected to bat, India struck twice to send back the openers cheaply in the final Test at Chennai. However, Joe Root along with Moeen Ali rescued his side to with a 146-run stand for the 3rd wicket. After Root fell for 88, Ali got support from Bairstow and brought up his 4th century in 2016. He put 88 with Bairstow, who fell short of a fifty by 1 run to take his side 284/4 at end of the day. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day’s play.

1 – Joe Root became the first player to score at least one fifty in all 5 matches of a Test series on two occasions. He scored fifties in all 5 Tests against India in 2014 at home.

1 – For the first time, Umesh Yadav has bowled the first over of a Test match.

2 – Only the 2nd time Ashwin went wickets-less on the opening day of a Test match. (Where he bowled in complete day) The other instance was in 2012 at Nagpur also vs England.

3 – Joe Root became the 3rd visiting player to score a fifty plus in all the 5 matches in Test series in Asia. West Indies’ ED Weekes in 1948/49 and BF Butcher in 1956/57 did it in a series in India.

4 – Moeen Ali became the 4th England player to aggregate 1000 runs in Test cricket in 2016. This is only the 5th instance of 4 players of a team aggregating 1000 runs in a calendar year.

5 – Parthiv Patel became the 5th Indian to affect 100 dismissals as keeper in international cricket. He is the fastest in terms of innings to effect 100 keeping dismissals.

5 – Number of times Ravindra Jadeja has dismissed Alastair Cook in this series, the most times Cook has been dismissed by any bowler in a Test series.

6 – Moeen Ali became only the 6th England player to score multiple tons in a Test series in India. Alastair Cook was the last to do so in 2012.

8 – Number of tosses India lost including this Test in the last 9 Test matches at Chepauk. They won only in 2005 vs Sri Lanka.

9 – Ishant Sharma became only the 4th Indian pacer and 9th overall to take 100 wickets in Asia. He is the slowest among the 9 pacers.

10y 290d – Time taken by Alastair Cook from Test debut to complete 11,000 runs in Tests, the shortest time taken by any player. Rahul Dravid took 13 years and 149 days to complete 11,000 Test runs.

11 – Number of Tests Joe Root has played against India and scored at least one fifty. This is the longest streak for any player against an opposition in Tests.

31y 357d – Age at which Alastair Cook crossed 11,000 run mark in Test cricket, the youngest to do so. Sachin Tendulkar did it at the age of 34 years and 95 days.

50 – Catches taken by Virat Kohli in Test cricket. He became the 13th Indian to take 50 catches as a fielder in Test cricket.

75 – Penalty runs conceded by India in Test cricket, the most by any team by a far margin. Next most is 30 by Pakistan.

252 – Innings taken by Alastair Cook to complete 11,000 runs in Tests, the 3rd most innings taken by any player. He is only the 9th player to complete 11,000 Test runs.
