At 37, MS Dhoni seems to be getting younger. The wicketkeeper-batsman is as agile behind the wickets as he was years before, effects dismissals at lightning speed besides giving necessary inputs to his captain and bowlers that also deliver often. On Tuesday, Dhoni almost pulled off a stunning catch in the second ODI against Australia in Nagpur and had he been successful, the legend would have raised the benchmark a notch up.

Dhoni’s brilliant anticipation almost earned India a wicket

It was in the 33rd over of the Australian innings when the visitors were chasing 251 to win the match and square the series. They were 145 for 4 with Peter Handscomb (48) and Marcus Stoinis (53) batting together. The ball was in the hands of the slow bowler Kedar Jadhav and he almost took the fifth Australian wicket, thanks to Dhoni’s electric movement behind the wickets. Handscomb was on strike when he tried to paddle sweep the bowler and the veteran, anticipating the shot, moved towards his left.

Handscomb’s bat touched the ball but instead of fetching any run, it almost landed in MS Dhoni’s grip. The ball deflected out after hitting the gloves and the fielding side was distraught. Captain Virat Kohli couldn’t believe his eyes and Dhoni himself too was disappointed and it could be known even from his composure.

Here’s the video:

Handscomb did not last too long after that as his 39-run partnership with Stoinis was broken by Ravindra Jadeja who ran him out. It was a vital breakthrough as the visitors fumbled from there on in their mission to reach the target and fell short by just eight runs.

However, it was that brilliant anticipation from Dhoni, a veteran of over 300 games, that almost earned India a wicket remained a top draw of the match. Although he failed to score a run with the bat, MS Dhoni made it up with his keeping and giving a crucial advice to Kohli regarding the change of bowlers in the death overs. It clicked for India and successfully restricted Australia eventually.
