India and England have started the much-anticipated series on Friday. The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai so far has been slightly disappointing. The wicket has been flat and bowlers have had to struggle a lot and have not got a great deal of support from the turf itself.
England captain Joe Root won the toss on the first day of the match and now have batted for a long time to form a formidable first-innings total. During the first day’s play, Dominic Sibley and Joe Root got together for a 200-run partnership which lasted for more than 60 overs. The partnership was eventually ended by Jasprit Bumrah in the last over before the close of play on day one.
Bumrah bowled a yorker at the pads of Sibley, who was batting on 87, and the batsman was caught napping. It was clear that the batsman wasn’t ready for something like that and didn’t anticipate. Bumrah tried to get Ben Stokes out using the same tactic on the second day’s play. But missed that by just an inch.
How did he not get a wicket there?: Murali Kartik exclaims in the commentary box
The incident happened in the third over of the day’s play. Stokes had faced only 10 balls by then and the Indian pacer coming from over the wickets bowled his trademark T20 yorker at the stumps. The delivery was really quick, but Stokes somehow managed to dig it out. The ball hit the inside edge of the bat and saved him from getting either bowled or leg before wicket (LBW).
It was almost astonishing how Bumrah didn’t get a wicket on that. Commentator Murali Karthik asked on-air with despair, “how did he not get a wicket with that?” It was a perfect yorker, his co-commentator Mark Butcher further said and pointed out how these balls have been key to Bumrah’s success in white-ball cricket.
