India vs South Africa, 2019: 2nd T20I – Kohli goes past Rohit, De Kock's captaincy debut and more stats

India showed their supremacy over the South African team with a 7-wicket win in the 2nd game of the 3-match T20I series in Mohali. Quinton de Kock (52) and Temba Bavuma (49) added 57 for the 2nd wicket in 7.3 overs as the visitors looked set for a 170 plus finish. However, they could only make 62 runs in the last nine overs and ended with 149/5. Shikhar Dhawan’s 31-ball 40 at the top gave India a good start while skipper Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 72 ensured that India finished the chase without any hiccup.

All the statistical highlights from India’s comfortable 7-wicket win against South Africa:

A first for India:

1 – This was India’s maiden win against South Africa in the T20I format at home. India played Proteas in two T20Is before – both during the 2015 series and lost both while defending a total.

India’s happy hunting venue:

3 – This was India’s 3rd T20I match at the PCA Stadium in Mohali; they ended up winning all the T20Is by chasing a target. Their previous two appearances at this venue were in 2009 against Sri Lanka and in 2016 against Australia; both were won by them with 6 wickets and five balls to spare.

Kohli goes past Rohit:

2441 – Virat Kohli became the leading run-getter in the Men’s T20I format as he surpassed his own team-mate Rohit Sharma’s tally of 2434 runs. Rohit became the leading run-getter of this format in February this year.

22 – Kohli now has 22 fifty-plus scores in the T20I format; the most by any player. He went past Rohit in this list as well. The Indian opener has 17 fifties and 4 hundreds in T20Is while his skipper Kohli is yet to score a century.

A new captain for South Africa:

11 – Quinton de Kock became the 11th captain in the T20I format for South Africa. Only three among those 11 managed to score a fifty on captaincy debut including De Kock. David Miller scored an unbeaten 65 on his captain debut in the game against Pakistan this year while Graeme Smith scored 61 in South Africa’s first ever T20I played against New Zealand in 2005.

Kohli draws level with Afridi:

11 – Number of Player of the Match awards for Virat Kohli in T20I cricket; the joint 2nd most in the format. Shahid Afridi also received 11 such awards while Mohammad Nabi has 12 POTM awards including the one against Bangladesh on Sunday.

Captains dominate the game:

8 – This is only the 8th match in the T20I history where both the team captains scored fifties and the first such match in India. The last of the previous seven T20Is to include fifties from both the captains was the Scotland-Netherlands match on Monday. That game witnessed an aggregate of 185 runs by captains; the most by captains in a T20I.

Six or nothing:

12 – Rohit Sharma scored 12 off 12 balls with two sixes in this game. This is the longest T20I innings for any player that involves only sixes. Awais Zia of Pakistan also faced 12 balls in the 2012 Dubai T20I against England for his lone scoring shot of six runs.
