After some lacklustre performances in the Test and ODI series, the Windies would be playing a three-match T20I series against India, which gets underway at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Carlos Brathwaite will lead the team, which would be trying to make some amends in the 20-overs fixtures. Lucknow and Chennai are the venues for the other encounters.

In the meantime, the Windies have been dealt with a body blow as all-rounder Andre Russell has been ruled out of the T20I series due to a knee injury. He missed a flight from Dubai and had not arrived in the country today. Subsequently, he also missed today’s practice session as the rest of the 13 members of the visitors sweated it out as per reports in ESPNcricinfo.

Russell was one of the seven players to join the T20I team in the last three days. The news of his injury was confirmed by Windies chairman of selectors Courtney Browne. He has played quite a bit of T20s over the last few days. He captained Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and returned with 163 runs in 11 matches at an average of 23.28.

His top score of 121 not out came against Trinbago Knight Riders in the round robin stage. The knock came at the iconic Queens Park Oval in Trinidad while his team was chasing a 200 plus score. He was also one of their gun bowlers, providing wickets at regular intervals. The 30-year-old then went to play for Nangarhar Leopards in the inaugural edition of the Afghanistan  Premier League (APL).

He played only one match and couldn’t open his account. Moreover, he didn’t get to bowl either. Later through an Instagram post, Russell mentioned that he was leaving the APL due to the injured knee. Earlier, he also missed the ODI series against the Men in Blue due to the same injury.
