India vs Windies: Ravi Ashwin and Ishant Sharma to undergo fitness test before selection
The announcement of the Indian Test squad has been postponed due to the uncertainty over the availability of these players.
Before travelling down under to face Australia, India will be locking horns with Windies on home turf for two Test matches. But the selectors have some concerns regarding the fitness of two of their very important players in the Test setup, Ravi Ashwin and Ishant Sharma.
Both these gentlemen are set to undergo a fitness test and due to that, the squad selection for the Windies series has been postponed. The scheduled selection meeting for the series was cancelled as all the five selectors were busy with some other responsibilities. As mentioned by a BCCI official, the fitness test for Ashwin and Ishant will happen on 29th September.
“Ashwin is already doing his rehabilitation at the NCA for a groin injury. Even Ishant is expected to join him there. As of now, there is a fitness test scheduled on Saturday, September 29. The selectors may announce the team a day earlier if NCA physios and trainers rule the duo out even before fitness tests,” a senior BCCI official said on Wednesday according to the Times of India.
“It was scheduled earlier but the five selectors itinerary was clashing as one (Sarandeep Singh) is in Dubai while other two are inspecting Vijay Hazare Trophy at different venues. So it was decided that this will be an informal meeting where the selectors will take stock of the situation,” the official added.
Windies series a preparatory for the Aussie test
India has a great chance of defeating the Aussies in their own den as the side looks way too fragile at this point in time. But for that to happen, the selection committee still has to send the best squad possible. The chairman MSK Prasad and his colleague Devang Gandhi met at a hotel on Wednesday to draw an initial list of the squad before the main squad is out.
“The selection committee’s aim is to have a team for the series that will be a mirror image of the squad that will travel to Australia. Maybe two or more players to 15 for the Tests will be added when the team travels down under,” the official concluded.
