The opening Test in Rajkot between Virat Kohli-led India and Windies turned out to be a drab affair as the home team racked up a victory by an innings and 272 runs to take a 1-0 lead with one match remaining in Hyderabad, starting October 12. However, the developments outside the cricket pitch weren’t something to cheer about by any stretch of the imagination.

Before the start of the second day’s play, a car carrying three scorers to the venue toppled and injured all of them. Tushar Trivedi, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) affiliated scorer underwent a shoulder surgery thereafter. On Saturday, he was discharged and left for home. However, that wasn’t the end of the mishaps during the encounter.

On the very next day, Pupatbhai Talatia, the in-charge of the ground security, suffered a cardiac arrest at the ground. He inspected the ground before play got underway and complained to have felt uneasy. Subsequently, he was rushed to the hospital. “He is better now. The doctors are monitoring him,” a Saurashtra Cricket Association official was quoted as saying in Sportstar.

India dominate the Windies

The first match took a tad over eight seasons to come to a close. India racked up a massive 649/9 in their first innings courtesy of Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Prithvi Shaw’s century. The likes of Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara made some valuable contributions to help their team amass the massive score. Devendra Bishoo picked up four wickets.

In their first innings, the Windies lost wickets at regular intervals and were never in contention to challenge India’s score. Kraigg Brathwaite’s men folded for 181 runs. While following on, the visiting team could only manage 196 runs despite Kieran Powell’s 93-ball 83. Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav were the wreckers in chief with the ball for the hosts.
