Indian fans lash out at Waqar Younis for questioning few Indian players’ sportsmanship
Waqar took a dig at the Indian team for not showing any intent to chase down the total.
The clash on Sunday was supposed to be England versus an amalgamation of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. All the other Asian teams needed the Men in Blue to come up trumps to have a realistic chance of making it to the semi-finals. But things didn’t go as plan for India as they lost the match by 31 runs. Rather the way MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav played in the last five overs raised many eyebrows and among them was the former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis.
With the win over India, England have revived their World Cup hopes and has put Pakistan and Bangladesh’s fortunes on the tenterhooks. Sri Lanka have been knocked out of the tournament as well. The dependent Asian teams now would want New Zealand to beat England in the final league game apart from winning their respective matches. Pakistan still have a decent though but the Kiwis will have to get the better of the hosts at any cost.
A lot of permutations have changed with India’s loss and Waqar Younis took a dig at the sportsmanship of the few of the Indian players for the way they approached the chase only to attract the ire of the Indian fans. It’s not who you are.. What you do in life defines who you are… Me not bothered if Pakistan gets to the semis or not but one thing is for sure.. Sportsmanship of few Champions got tested and they failed badly #INDvsEND #CWC2019,” he wrote in a tweet.
It didn’t go down well with the Indian fans clearly and they lashed out at the former cricketer. There was nothing related to sportsmanship in losing and winning the game and Waqar’s tweet was clearly out of context. The fans also pointed out the same and adviced him to not be dependent.
Jadhav and Dhoni’s approach questioned by many
However, a lot of former cricketers have come down hard at the way India chased down the total. Especially the last five overs when Jadhav and MS Dhoni batted. The duo added 39 runs in their partnership but there was no intent in their batting which left the fans disappointed. Even the likes of Nasser Hussain and Sourav Ganguly were baffled and criticised them on air.
Here’s how Waqar Younis had to face the wrath of the Indian fans:
