Indian head coaches since 2000 and their record

Former Indian captain, Anil Kumble turned former Indian coach as he stepped down from his position on Tuesday, his last day at the office as per the initial agreement unless as an extension. India, under Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni (two series), had achieved a lot of success with Kumble as the coach in the last one year. During his tenure the team achieved tremendous success in Test cricket and towards the end, almost won the Champions Trophy. Among the individuals who took up the Indian head coach’s role since 2000, Kumble’s record is by far the best in terms of results in the longer format of the game. Here we look at how India fared under the various head coaches since 2000: John Wright (November 2000 to April 2005): John Wright (© Getty Images) John Wright took on as Indian head coach in November 2005 and took India to some new heights along with Sourav Ganguly, India’s captain then. Though Indian fell short on the last step on numerous occasions their performances in big tournaments like World Cup and Champions Trophy was lauded. Despite all that, Team India managed to produce better results under him and even set a world record for most consecutive successful run-chases in ODI format. In his presence, India excelled in the various formats under the leadership of MS Dhoni and won the ICC World Cup for the first time in 28 years. India lost every big series away from home and also lost a Test series at home after a long time. Under Kumble, India won 8 of the 10 series they played as they lost only a T20I series to West Indies in the USA where they had a chance to draw the series but the match was washed out. Another series was the Champions Trophy in which India stood as runners-up.
