Indian pace legend Zaheer Khan needed for a crucial role, reveals Anil Kumble
However, it's still uncertain if Zaheer will join Team India in England for the Champions Trophy in June.
In a recent development, Indian team head coach Anil Kumble has revealed that he would like Zaheer Khan to be on the coaching team. During Kumble’s meeting with BCCI office-bearers and members of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) in Hyderabad on May 21, the veteran leg-spinner proposed Zaheer Khan’s name as team India’s bowling coach. Kumble has also demanded a promotion for former Sanjay Bangar, to be made the assistant coach. Bangar is currently part of the support staff.
The 38-year-old left arm pacer was approached last year by the BCCI to be the India’s bowling coach. However, the deal didn’t go through as both the sides failed to reach a consensus. Also, Zaheer did not want to take full-time responsibility and demanded a whopping Rs 4 crore for 100 days’ service in a year.
According to Times of India, a spokesperson confirmed the news stating, “Yes, Kumble wants a bowling coach for the team, and he has recommended Zaheer’s name for the role. We’ll discuss Kumble’s proposals at an appropriate forum.”
On Tuesday, veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh voiced his support on Twitter for Zaheer Khan as the bowling coach.
However, it’s still uncertain if Zaheer will join Team India in England for the Champions Trophy in June. Apart from that, the Indian coach has called for a permanent, professional manager to accompany the team at all times. Presently, the responsibility is carried out by a particular state association assigned by the Board.
As for Kumble, his coaching stint with the national team will get over soon after the Champions Trophy. The BCCI has started inviting applications for the position. Anil Kumble will get a direct entry for the process.
