The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached its middle stages, where all the eight franchises have most likely played three or more matches to get a better image of their combinations for the tournament. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team suffered a disappointing loss by a margin of 40 runs against the Mumbai Indians (MI), in the game last night at the Wankhede stadium.

RCB had made three changes in their playing XI and had dropped their premier overseas opener Brendon McCullum to bring in another Kiwi all-rounder Corey Anderson for the match against Mumbai.

A great opening but a dismal end

The RCB skipper Virat Kohli couldn’t have asked for a better start from his new ball bowler after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Umesh Yadav bowled two ripping deliveries to dismiss MI in-form opener Suryakumar Yadav and then Ishan Kishan off the very first two balls of the match. However, things started easing for the home team as their skipper Rohit Sharma composed an explosive and strong partnership with Evin Lewis of 108 runs that laid a strong foundation for a huge total.

Rohit scored a commendable 94 runs off 52 balls to guide his team towards a huge total of 213 runs and made a mockery of the RCB bowlers by striking some big and orthodox hits in all parts of the ground. Both the spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar conceded too many runs and were not able to finish their quota of 4 overs each. Thus, Kohli decided to accommodate the four overs of pace bowling from his newest overseas player Corey Anderson.

Will be back strongly in the next game at home: Anderson

Anderson picked up two big wickets in the match, that of Rohit and Lewis, but was taken for away for too many runs by the MI batters, as he conceded 47 runs in his 4 overs. During the chase, the RCB skipper Virat looked to be the lone warrior for his team to chase the heavy total as the rest of the batters failed to provide him the support.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 92 off 62 balls on one end from the start as wickets kept constantly falling from the other end. Anderson, who was added to the side to strengthen the middle order with his finishing abilities, was also dismissed for a golden duck by left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya.

After the game, Anderson praised his skipper for his remarkable and outstanding effort, but the team could not end up on the winning side due to the disappointing performance from the rest of the team. The Kiwi all-rounder revealed that RCB  will surely turn things around in the next game at Bangalore against Delhi Daredevils on Saturday, April 21.

“Great effort from the skipper @virat.kohli last night! Disappointed in the result, but looking forward to turning it around back in Bangalore!#vivoipl #rcb #playbold” posted Anderson on Instagram.
