IPL 2018: Dinesh Karthik rejects DLS method wants the VJD method to be used

The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method is the preferred method to determe the target for a game where the overs are reduced due to rain. The formula has come under scrutiny several times due to its inability to understand the match situation and produce equatable scenario in the shortest format of the game. On Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders lost the home game to Kings XI Punjab by 9 wickets in a rain affected game.

Chasing 192, Kings XI were 96/0 in 8.2 overs, with a required run rate of over eight runs. When the revised target was announced they needed 29 off 28 balls to win. What gave KXIP the benefit here was that they had all the ten wickets intact. The DLS method gives a lot of emphasis to the number of wickets fallen/in hand and the calculation titls either side based on the same. Alternatively an Indian engineer V Jaydevan has instrumented the VJD method that is better suited for ODI and T20 cricket. This has been used on several occasions in Indian domestic cricket.

A target too easy

KKR skipper, Dinesh Karthik has called for the use of Jaydevan (VJD) method to determine the targets.

“Suddenly after rain, they needed run-a-ball. I didn’t understand that bit but I am sure Duckworth-Lewis is something people are still trying to figure out what it is,” an irritated Karthik said at the post-match press conference.

In his view, had KKR managed to get two quick wickets the complexion of the game could’ve changed and the mounting pressure of the asking rate can put the chasing team under a lot of pressure. But as per the revised rate KXIP needed run-a-ball 29 to win which is an easy target any day.

“I have always thought that the VJD is an Indian method and it’s an Indian domestic tournament, why not think about it in the future? It’s been proven that it’s a really good method. We have used in domestic tournaments. Only for IPL, we use DLS. Why not think about VJD here and promote it?” Karthik added.

The Knight Riders fell 10-15 runs short to the kind of total they were set up to achieve at the end of first innings as they scored only 11 runs in the last two overs. However, they didn’t bowl well to defend their score. KXIP openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul started smashing the ball right from the start and looked in great control. They did not lose wickets in the powerplay which was key to their victory.

Star allrounder Andre Russell pulled his hamstring and had to walk off as he failed to complete the fourth over. This comes as a big blow to KKR who do not have the depth in the bench strength to replace Russell.
