Kapil Dev vouches for pink ball in the IPL next year
India are yet to play their maiden Test under the lights.
Pink-ball Test cricket has been introduced back in 2015 at the Adelaide Oval when Australia and New Zealand locked horns in an exciting contest under the lights. There have been a number of Test matches since then, however, India haven’t participated in any match. They were scheduled to play a couple of Day/Night Test against the Windies and Australia later this year.
However, Ravi Shastri has previously mentioned that playing Test cricket under the lights would neutralize the effects from the spinners. The team also don’t want to play in Australia under the lights for the fact that it would hand an undue advantage to the Aussies. Meanwhile, Kapil Dev, the former Indian slipper has mentioned that India can use the Indian Premier League in order to get used to the pink ball.
“IPL as the testing ground”- Kapil Dev
“If the Indian team is wanting to play day-night Test at home with pink ball, they could use next year’s IPL as the testing ground. If they are serious this is a good way to ensure that the day-night Test match happens,” Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by The Times of India in an exclusive interview.
While the Indian team is strictly against playing Day/Night Tests in the recent future, Kapil Dev has backed the format. “Since the conditions in the sub-continent is mostly hot, day-night Test will surely work and it depends on how BCCI and the Indian team management take the call on the issue,” the former Indian World Cup-winning captain mentioned.
However, this isn’t the first time when the Indian board is reluctant to immediately adapt to a new revelation. Previously, they also opposed the Decision Review System (DRS). However, they have gradually accepted the technology and will recently be implementing it in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It will now be interesting to see when they play their maiden Day/Night Test.
