IPL 2018: Security beefed up in Chennai due to protests over Cauvery water dispute

Due to the ongoing Cauvery water dispute issue threatening the security in the home matches of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, there is also a possibility of several fringe elements continuing their agitation. As a result, security arrangement has been beefed up to prevent any untoward incident, police said on Monday.

Political parties also have called for canceling the match with the state boiling against the central government for not setting up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC). On Tuesday, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium — popularly known as Chepauk Stadium, in what will be their first home game since their return after their 2-year-ban.

According to the police, more than 2,000 police personnel would be deployed at the stadium and, as a precautionary measure, people wearing a black colored dress, which has been decided as a sign of protest, will not be allowed to watch the match. Speaking to reporters, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar said necessary security will be provided to the IPL organizers. He said it was up to the organizers to decide whether to cancel the match or not. Jayakumar also added that it is for the people to decide whether to boycott the IPL match or not.

No matches to be moved out of Chennai

Earlier, CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan clarified that the franchise’s home games are set to move out of the city due to the Cauvery water issue. Hence, rumours about the fixtures being shifted to Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram were quashed. Any decision on shifting the matches will be taken only by the BCCI. The CSK management has been following the developments on the Cauvery issue. The matches that are to be played in Chennai will go on as scheduled,” as reported by TOI.

“We have already informed the Chennai police about the schedule and they will handle the law and order situation appropriately. With the kind of fencing we have inside the stadium, nobody will be allowed to enter the playing field We hope for the best,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said.
