IPL 2018: Sunil Gavaskar feels that Mayank Markande is losing out on bite
Markande has picked up only three wickets in his last five matches.
Mayank Markande has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket on the back of some stupendous shows for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Punjab leg-break bowler came into limelight when he nipped out four wickets in the opening game of the tournament. He also trapped MS Dhoni with a wrong-un which bamboozled MSD.
In Mumbai’s next game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the youngster churned out four wickets and set the cat amongst the pigeons in the home team’s camp. Though the spell couldn’t fetch the visitors their maiden victory, Markande’s prowess with the leather, well and truly, grabbed several eyeballs.
The challenge ahead of Markande
Subsequently, he stormed to the helm of the leading wicket-takers with seven scalps in two games. From being an unknown figure, the 20-year old became an overnight sensation. However, Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian batsman, has remarked that Markande is steadfastly losing out on the bite he telecasted earlier with his guile and trajectory as per reports in The Times of India (TOI).
Gavaskar’s comments can’t be ruled out as Markande’s form has dipped as the tournament has progressed. In the last five games, the tweaker has only mustered three wickets, however, he hasn’t been taken for too many runs, which will keep him in a good stead. Mumbai would play their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The track has assisted the spinners to a little extent and Markande’s role in the game might be a pivotal factor for the visiting team to come out trumps. Nevertheless, going into the future Markande needs to refurbish his skills, else teams would figure him out through video analytics and the spinner would find it difficult to adjust to the dynamics of the sport.
