The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), on Saturday, approved the change of timing for the playoff games of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). Usually, the night games start at 8 p.m. And the forthcoming playoffs were also scheduled to start at the same time. However, the Vinod Rai-panel approved to the idea of starting the game early, thus preponing the timing of the playoffs to 7.30 p.m. Last year, the playoff games had started at 7 p.m.

According to reports in media, a BCCI official said that the possibility of dew and the request of official broadcasters convinced the CoA to change the timing. Dew can play a massive role in deciding the outcome of the games and an early start will definitely minimize its impact to some effect. On the other hand, official broadcasters Star Sports requested for an early start keeping in mind the elaborate presentation ceremony after the game.

“We have the playoffs in the south where dew is a huge factor. Also, Star had written to us to prepone the timings. If you realise, there is the case of an extended presentation ceremony after the playoffs. Keeping all this in mind, it was felt that we should bring it forward,” the official was quoted as saying by Business Standard.

The news will also bring some respite for the fans who have suffered a bit this season due to slow over-rates which saw the games being finished well after the scheduled time.

Other big decisions

The CoA also took a couple of other big decisions during the meeting in New Delhi. Rahul Dravid, the India ‘A’ and U-19 coach, is being considered for the head coach’s role at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

“We are looking at Dravid for the role of head coach at the NCA. Due process will be followed in the appointment,” CoA chief Vinod Rai told reporters.

The BCCI also recommended the names of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja and Poonam Yadav for the Arjuna Award.
