Kings XI Punjab’s (KXIP) Ravi Ashwin may have won his first match of IPL 2019 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium, but he definitely didn’t win any fans after what he did to Jos Buttler. Ashwin made quite a furore for Mankading Jos Buttler when the match was poised tightly with the batsman on 69 runs. His dismissal changed the course of the match and Royals’ crumbled to a 14-run defeat.

The KXIP skipper found Buttler moving out of his crease at the non-striker’s end. During the 13th over of the innings, bowled by Ashwin, he went into his delivery stride, paused for a second or two, during which Buttler’s bat moved out of the crease. Ashwin then removed the bails and appealed for his dismissal, which was confirmed by the third umpire.

Buttler was seen in an angered discussion with Ravi Ashwin and was not a happy man going back into the dressing room, cussing and hitting his bat on the ground.

Ashwin explains his actions of Mankading Buttler

In the post-match conference, KXIP captain Ravi Ashwin clarified his side of the actions. He called his actions well within the rules of cricket and asked them not to be called unsporting. He was answering to him being accused of unfairly running out Buttler.

However, his clarification didn’t go down well with a member of England’s women’s cricket team, opener Danielle Wyatt who is currently in Sri Lanka. Wyatt called Ashwin’s act of running out Buttler an embarrassing one since the batsman was inside the crease if the bowler had normally delivered the ball. “embarrassing!! He was still in the crease when he would have let go of the ball,” Wyatt wrote in her tweet.

Here’s her tweet:

KXIP won the match by 14 runs as RR team’s chase capitulated after the wicket of Jos Buttler who was marshalling the chase beautifully with a 78-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane for the opening wicket and 30 with Sanju Samson. After being well placed at 108/1, Buttler dismissal saw them going down quickly and reach only 170 in the pursuit of 184.
