IPL 2019: David Willey cock-a-hoop after CSK retained him
Willey also hailed the supporters for staying beside them throughout.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are the most successful team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) having won the championship as many as thrice. Last time around, they picked some aged, but experienced players and they didn’t let their team down by any means as the MS Dhoni-led franchise stormed to victory in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Yesterday, they released three of their players from the 25-member squad, namely English fast bowler Mark Wood as well as Kshitiz Sharma and Kaniskh Sekh, two of their uncapped stars. In the meantime, they retained 22 players, one of which was English all-round cricketer David Willey. He initially went unsold in the auction after being listed at a significant base price of INR 2 crore.
An ecstatic Willey
However, fate had something else in store for him. Kedar Jadhav, CSK’s middle-order batsman, injured his hamstring following the opening match against Mumbai Indians. Thereafter, Willey was called in as a replacement of Jadhav. He ended up playing only three matches in the event and picked up a couple of wickets. He is also no mug with the bat but didn’t get a chance to show his batting prowess.
But the fact that he can be devastating with both and ball, can’t be denied by any means. His English teammate Sam Billings has also been persisted with. The batter played a couple of match-winning knocks, which would’ve prompted the franchise to retain him. Meanwhile, Willey was over the moon after he was retained and he expressed his delight.
Willey also hailed the supporters for staying beside them throughout while showing his eagerness to don the yellow jersey. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Absolutely buzzing about being retained by @ChennaiIPL! Awesome franchise with even better support! Can’t wait to get the Yellow shirt back on! #Yellove #CSK,”
