The Chennai Super Kings’ unsuccessful chase against the Mumbai Indians in the final was a mixture of all interesting things in the second half. It started with MS Dhoni’s first runout dismissal in the last two IPL seasons and ended up with the defending champions falling one short of MI’s total. Super Kings got two overs of 20 runs at death with a hat-trick of fours and a hat-trick of sixes but those were sandwiched between two special overs from Jasprit Bumrah. Lasith Malinga bounced back by delivering the final over with 140+ speeds and finished off with a slow yorker that won them the title.

Here are the lesser known stats from Mumbai Indians’ 4th successive IPL title in an odd year

Another MI final with Dhoni

Mumbai Indians made it to the IPL final on five instances only to face a team with MS Dhoni. They faced Dhoni-led CSK in 2010, 2013, 2015 and now in 2019. Dhoni was keeper-batsman for the Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 when they faced MI. All these five finals were won by the teams chasing.

Hyderabad and thrilling T20 finals

Only on four instances, a team won a Twenty20 tournament final by a 1-run margin. Eagles defeated Rhinos in the 2010 Zimbabwe Domestic T20 while Bengal got better of Madhya Pradesh in the 2011 Syed Mushtaq Ali final by a 1-run margin. MI defeated RPS by one run only during 2017 IPL final before replicating it against CSK. The Eagles-Rhinos game was played in Harare while the remaining three matches were held at RGICS in Hyderabad.

CSK finally dismiss Hardik

For the first time since 2018, Hardik Pandya got out in an IPL game against the Chennai Super Kings. Hardik remained unbeaten in five of the six innings against CSK over the last two seasons scoring 112 runs at a strike rate of 149.33.

MI’s team effort

As many as four players aggregated 400 and more runs in this IPL for the Mumbai Indians. Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya ended up with 400+ runs this season for MI. This is only the 2nd instance of any team having four players with 400+ runs in an IPL season. Mumbai Indians had four 400+ runs players during the 2013 edition.

The title machine

Rohit Sharma featured in five IPL finals including four as a captain and ended up on the winning side in all the five. He is now the most successful captain in the history of IPL and also the player to be part of most IPL winning finals. Rohit, overall, led his teams in six T20 finals and won all of those. In the all-time list of captains, who won the most T20 finals, only MS Dhoni (7) is ahead of Rohit having captained in a record 13 finals.
