IPL 2019: ICC refuses to comment on MS Dhoni's behaviour with the umpires in Jaipur
Dhoni accepted his mistake and was fined 50 percent of his match fee.
The match between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) witnessed the rare another side of MS Dhoni. The CSK skipper was clearly not happy with the umpiring during the crunch last over of the game and stormed into the field. He pointed his finger at the umpire Ulhas Gandhe who had called it waist-high no-ball from Ben Stokes only to be revoked by the square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford.
The match was hanging in the balance with CSK needing eight runs off three balls. If the no-ball would’ve been called, then the required runs would’ve come down to five runs off the same number of balls with the free hit to follow. However, despite Dhoni’s furious intervention, Oxenford didn’t overturn his decision. Gandhe, the straight umpire, was at fault here for making the decision when it is the job of the other umpire.
MS Dhoni’s actions were criticised by many former cricketers even as he was fined 50 percent of his match fee for breaching the IPL code of conduct.
ICC’s reaction
Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has refused to comment on the incident according to Mumbai Mirror. The world cricketing body explained that the incident took place in the ‘domestic game’ and they aren’t entitled to have their say.
But if they had to react, how ICC would’ve dealt with MS Dhoni’s conduct in Jaipur? According to the laws, it would’ve been a level 2 offence only if the behaviour was classified as ‘serious’. The punishment, in that case, would be 50-100 percent match fee fine and two demerit points. The extreme action in this category is the eight-match suspension but Dhoni would’ve escaped it as a first-time offence by him.
Though it all ended well in the end as the CSK won the game and even MS Dhoni accepted his mistake and agreed to the sanction.
