IPL 2019: Jos Buttler reveals what he told Ravichandran Ashwin after ‘Mankading’ controversy
Though the dismissal was legal Ashwin was slammed for going against the spirit of the game.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 will remain in popular memory for its ‘Mankading’ controversy that unfolded at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on March 25. It was just the fourth game of the tournament in which Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) skipper Ravi Ashwin decided to dismiss Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) batsman Jos Buttler at the non-striker’s end after the latter left his crease in search of a quick run.
The incident led to outrage with the cricketing world remaining split over Ashwin’s act. Technically, the act was legal but in terms of the game’s spirit, it was condemned by many.
Ashwin and Buttler were seen involved in an aggressive verbal duel following the incident and though the latter remained silent over the incident for long, he started opening up over the same of late. Recently, he expressed his disappointment over Ashwin’s act and also sought the law to be clearer on the mode of dismissal.
The hard-hitting English batsman who has a strike rate of over 143 in T20s, has now spoken over his reaction to Ashwin’s choice at that very moment which saw the RR losing their plot and the game eventually. Buttler was batting on 69 off 43 balls at the time of his dismissal and the RR were well placed at 108 for 1 in pursuit of 185. They lost the game by 14 runs.
“I was disappointed. It doesn’t happen often in cricket, but when it does it actually is disappointing. Unfortunately, I have got out in a similar fashion before as well, so I will make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Jos Buttler was quoted as saying by Times of India when asked about his take on the controversy.
I asked him if really wishes to play the game that way
When asked about what he told the off-spinner, Jos Buttler said: “I just asked him if he really wishes to play the game that way. Whether he thought it was the right thing to do. And he obviously thought it was, in his opinion.”
Both Buttler and Ravi Ashwin have found themselves in controversies related to ‘Mankading’ in the past with Sri Lanka being the common opposition. Butter vowed to not let it happen once again in the future.
The England batsman failed to score in the next two games after that bizarre incident and regained his focus in the fourth match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in which he hit a fifty. He scored 37 in his last game which was against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.
