IPL 2019: Likely auction date and venue
The tournament will be played before the World Cup in May.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a witness to 11 jaw-dropping editions. Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni-captained Chennai Super Kings are the most successful teams in the championship, having won the tournament thrice. Kolkata Knight Riders have won it twice while Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers have won it once.
The forthcoming season is scheduled to start from the third week of March and the eight franchises have already put forth their list of retained and released players for the upcoming edition. In the meantime, it has been learned that the auction for the next edition will be a one-day affair and will be staged in Jaipur on December 18 as per reports in Sportstar Live.
Only 70 slots are available- 50 Indians and 20 overseas- and hence the auction won’t probably take more than one day. The franchises have already been informed about the same, though there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The representatives of the teams will be briefed about the proceedings one day prior to the auction.
Host country also not decided
The teams have a combined purse of INR 145.25 crores. CSK, last year’s champion, have only a couple of spots (both Indians) to fill. Among the other seven franchises, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), who are yet to get their hands on the coveted trophy, have the highest slots available- (11 Indians and four overseas).
Moreover, the venue for the next edition is known either. With elections set to take place during that time, the 20-overs mega event may be shifted out of India with United Arab Emirates (UAE) and South Africa as the probable countries. However, the franchises want UAE to host the extravaganza citing time difference and logistical issues as a few reasons.
