The Mumbai Indians recorded their 3rd consecutive victory in IPL 2019 as they sneaked through a 3-wicket win against the Kings XI Punjab. KL Rahul’s maiden IPL century and Chris Gayle’s 36-ball 63 powered the Kings XI to 197/4. In the chase, MI could make only 65/3 in their first 10 overs and were still 133 runs away from a win. Kieron Pollard, who was leading MI in the absence of Rohit Sharma, promoted himself to No.4. He struck ten sixes and three fours on his way through to a 31-ball 83.

A record finish and MI’s biggest ever:

133 – Runs Mumbai Indians needed after the end of 10th over in this game; the most number of runs any team has successfully chased in the last ten overs in an IPL game. The record was held by Kings XI Punjab who chased 126 from their last ten against the RCB during the 2013 season game in Mohali.


198 – The 198-run target is the 2nd highest that Mumbai Indians has successfully chase in the IPL. Their highest is 199 also against Kings XI during the 2017 game played in Indore.


A debut to remember for Pollard:

83Kieron Pollard’s 83-run knock is the 2nd highest individual score by any player on captaincy debut in the IPL. Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 93 for the DD in the previous season against KKR.


The six hitting machine:

10 – Kieron Pollard became only the 2nd captain in the history to IPL to hit ten sixes in an IPL. Shreyas Iyer also hit ten sixes on his captaincy debut in the previous season.

Pollard is also the 2nd player to hit 10+ sixes in an innings for the Mumbai Indians. Sanath Jayasuriya hit 11 sixes during his unbeaten 48-ball 114 against CSK in the 2008 edition.


602 – With the 8th of his 10 sixes in this game, Kieron Pollard became the 2nd player to hit 600+ sixes in the Twenty20 format. Chris Gayle leads the list with 925 sixes thus far.


Gayle goes past Warner again:

1 – Chris Gayle now has been involved in 19 century partnerships out of which ten are for the first wicket. He went past David Warner who was a part of 18 100-run stands and as many as ten for the opening wicket. The hat-trick of century partnerships with Jonny Bairstow helped Warner to go past Gayle earlier this season.


For the MI without Gayle:

133 – For the first time since his Mumbai Indians debut in 2011, Rohit Sharma was not part of an MI playing XI in the IPL. He featured in 133 consecutive IPL matches played by MI; the 2nd longest streak by any player for any team in the IPL. Suresh Raina represented in CSK’s first 134 IPL matches before missing one in 2018.

A good day in the field for Miller:

4 – Number of catches for David Miller in this game; the joint-most by any fielder in an IPL game. Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis and David Warner took four catches each in the previous season while Rahul Tewatia also claimed four catches in MI’s first game of this season.
