How do you beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chepauk? Other teams, until now, struggled to post a big total after batting first and when the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) did, Shane Watson stormed back into form from nowhere to slam 96 off just 53 deliveries. The Dad’s Army has qualified for the playoffs with three matches to go and look primed to finish in the top two which has become a norm now.

It was almost a repeat of the final of the IPL 2018. The target was 176 and Shane Watson had no idea what’s happening in Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s first over. He played out a maiden over to start with and didn’t get off the mark until his eighth ball. CSK’s score was nothing in the first three overs and had lost Faf du Plessis to a stunning direct hit as well.

But then Suresh Raina arrived and he started to hit the ball to all the parts of the boundary. Watson also started to hit the middle of the bat and runs flowed like anything in the next few overs. The momentum was back with the Men in Blue and Watson just blazed away then. Raina fell for 38 but that didn’t deter the Australian.

He ripped apart Rashid Khan and Sandeep Sharma and it felt like he will go past the three-figure mark with utter ease. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s bouncer proved to be his undoing and Watson fell for 96. His innings was laced with nine fours and six sixes. After his wicket, things went to the last over but Kedar Jadhav kept his calm and took his team over the line.

Pandey and Warner propel SRH

Earlier, it was David Warner and Manish Pandey who provided the SRH with a brilliant start after Jonny Bairstow was dismissed for a duck. The former took the attack to the opposition and his partner too followed his footsteps. The duo added 115 runs for the third wicket and until Warner’s wicket fell, a total of 200 was in the sight for the visitors.

Even Pandey slowed down considerably then and the death overs belonged to CSK completely. Though they didn’t pick many wickets, the home team conceded only 41 runs in the last five overs which proved to be game-changing in the end. Nobody saw Watson’s knock coming and he took the game away from SRH single-handedly.
