IPL 2019: Prithvi Shaw reminds of Virender Sehwag, reckons Michael Vaughan
Shaw scored a magnificent 99 against KKR at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
The comparison between Prithvi Shaw and Virender Sehwag refuses to die down. The 19-year old has so far played just a handful of games at the highest level but his flashy Sehwag-like stroke-play has made many compare him with the legendary all-rounder. The latest to weigh in on the discussion is former England skipper Michael Vaughan who is currently in India for the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Vaughan’s comment came after Shaw’s impressive knock against Kolkata Knight Riders where he, unfortunately, missed his maiden century by just one run. Shaw almost singlehandedly kept Delhi Capitals in the game in pursuit of 185 before the game ended in a tie. Shaw started slowly, scoring just 26 runs off the first 29 balls he faced. He, however, soon shifted gears and scored 63 in the next 27 balls. The 55-ball knock was studded with 12 fours and 3 well-timed sixes. Delhi Capitals then went on to beat the Knight Riders in the super over.
Shaw’s shot selection and execution once again reminded the world of his immense wealth and Vaughan feels the youngster does show glimpses of the former India batting star.
“I do want to say that he is the nearest I have seen since Virender Sehwag. It is his style of play. The way his hands go away from his body and he opens up the off side. He has got a little bit of a similar movement to Sehwag. As a bowler, I would like to get the ball to nip back in,” Michael Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
Well, only time will tell how far Shaw goes in international cricket but one can say that he needs to at his best throughout his career to replicate what Sehwag did in his illustrious career. The former India opener retired from the game as one of India’s most decorated and aggressive openers. He bowed out of the game with more than 17,000 international runs including 38 tons. Shaw, on the other hand, has played just two Tests so far. And just like his illustrious predecessor, he too has scored a century on his debut.
Gambhir disagrees:
While the world is busy comparing Prithvi Shaw with Sehwag, the latter’s former opening partner Gautam Gambhir is not impressed with it. Pointing out the difference between the two batsmen, Gambhir said that Shaw still has a long way to go.
“Whoever is comparing (Shaw with Sehwag) needs to think before doing that… He has just started his career and there is a long way to go. I have never believed in comparisons. He has his own individuality and Sehwag has his own. He has played one match and Sehwag over 100 Tests,” Gambhir said.
