The RR top-order suffered a batting debacle yet again as skipper Smith and Sanju Samson made their way back to the dugout.
Rajasthan Royals, in dire need of a victory to break into the upper half of the points table, locked horns with a robust Delhi Capitals squad at Sharjah in Match 23 of IPL 2020. Considering Sharjah’s short boundaries, a carnage of sixes was expected at the venue.
It eventually turned out to be a lopsided encounter where Shreyas Iyer’s men registered an emphatic 46-run victory of RR and climbed up to the top of the points table. In six matches, Delhi have now registered five victories and are favourites to book Playoffs berth.
After being put to bat first, Capitals opened their batting with their usual Shikhar Dhawan-Prithvi Shaw pair. To their disappointment, both the openers were shown the exit door in the Powerplay itself, reducing DC to 42/2 in the fifth over. Skipper Shreyas Iyer, batting on 22 off 18, also had to depart after getting run out. Rishabh Pant also followed him after scoring an insubstantial 5 off 9 deliveries
After the top-order fiasco, the duo of Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer hit a flurry of sixes to bolster their side’s run flow. While Stoinis smashed a 30-ball 39, Hetmyer smoked five maximums and scored 45 off just 24 deliveries.
After the pair’s departure, the Patel duo– Harshal and Axar– stitched vital cameos to steer DC’s total to 184/8. Harshal scored 16 off 15 and Axar hammered an 8-ball 17. For Rajasthan, in-form Jofra Archer emerged as the pick of their bowlers as he plucked three wickets using his blistering pace.
Steve Smith and Sanju Samson disappoint yet again
In response, Royals, aiming to shrug off their top-order woes, started with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler. But RR again failed to stitch a steady opening stand after Buttler was dismissed off Ravi Ashwin’s delivery in the third over. The RR top-order suffered a batting debacle yet again as skipper Smith and Sanju Samson also made their way back to the dugout.
Jaiswal, stitching a cautious 36-ball 34, tried to accelerate in the end but fell prey to Marcus Stonis’ delivery. The game slipped off from RR’s hand after Jaiswal’s departure, with the scoreboard reflecting 82/5. Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals and RR eventually managed to post just 138 on the board, handing a comprehensive 46-run triumph to the Capitals.
