IPL 2020: 3 Mistakes committed by the losing side in the Final, MI vs DC
Delhi fell short of the title in the end.
Delhi Capitals failed to clinch their first-ever title as Mumbai Indians defeated them in the final. This is Mumbai’s fifth IPL triumph and they bettered their record for the most IPL titles. DC won the important toss but what followed was a nightmare. Their top order was rattled by Trent Boult and they were restricted to 156/7 in 20 overs. Though Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer tried their best to rescue DC was not able to post a big total.
Mumbai started their innings quite well as Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock provided them with a flying start. MI’s skipper played a ravishing knock and take his team home and in the grand finale. This is the first time IPL doesn’t have a new champion in a leap year. DC who reached the final for the first time needs to learn from their mistakes and come back as a stronger side next year.
Here are the three mistakes committed by DC against MI:-
1. DC Opened with Marcus Stoinis
The gamble to open with Marcus Stoinis worked in the game against SRH but it didn’t in the final. He departed on the first ball of the game and DC lost the much-needed momentum. However, all of this could have been avoided as Ajinkya Rahane should have opened the batting. Rahane is a regular opener and his technique is far better as compared to Stoinis. As it was a pressure game and Trent Boult and Bumrah were the opposition bowlers, opening with Stoinis turned out to be a blunder.
2. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant didn’t finish well
Delhi Capitals started at a poor note but their openers their middle-order came out strong. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant put on a solid partnership while counter-attacking MI bowlers. However, after getting settled in the middle, they didn’t finish well and that became a big margin for Delhi. DC made just 38 runs in the last five overs, if they would have scored around 60, the target could have been more challenging for MI.
3. Waiting too long for Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje’s second spell
Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are their strike bowlers and Shreyas Iyer should have turned towards him when they were struggling for wickets. Rabada was given overs with long break and even when MI needed 45 runs in the last 7 overs, he was removed from the attack. When they were brought back they started picking wickets at the death but it was way too late. In this ultimate fixture, Iyer shouldn’t have waited for the death overs with such low required rate.
