The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were up against the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 35th fixture of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. Both the teams were desperately looking for victory in this game as they haven’t been at their best so far in this season.

While KKR were placed at the fourth position with four wins in eight games, SRH were placed at the fifth position after registering three victories in eight fixtures. The last time these two teams met each other in the tournament, KKR chased down a target of 143 runs with seven wickets and two overs to spare.

The afternoon clash between two teams commenced with SRH skipper David Warner winning the toss and electing to field first. Batting first, the Knight Riders racked up a score of 163 on the board at the loss of five wickets. KKR had a decent start with Rahul Tripathi and Shubman Gill opening the innings, however, the team soon started collapsing and found themselves in a tough spot with the score on 105/4 at the end of the 15th over.

This is when captain Eoin Morgan and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik stepped in and smashed 34 off 23 and 29 off 14 respectively to pace up the innings in the end. For the bowling unit, T Natarajan took two important wickets of Rahul Tripathi and Andre Russell while the new addition Basil Thampi, Vijay Shankar, and Rashid Khan had one each to their name.

Lockie Ferguson bowls a brilliant spell for Knight Riders

With an aim to chase 164 runs, the new opening pair of Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson came on the field. The strategy bore fruitful results as they collected 58 runs in the powerplay. However, Hyderabad soon started collapsing with wickets falling quickly.

New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson proved to be a masterstroke for his team Knight Riders as he bowled an amazing spell of 3/15 in his four overs. In the middle of the 12th over, when the captain Warner and Manish Pandey were trying to rebuild the innings, Ferguson bowled a perfect yorker to dismiss the latter. Fast, dipping, and on target off-stump yorker by the Kiwi pacer hit the stumps even before Pandey could read it.

Further in the match, the Warner-led Hyderabad could make only 164 runs owing to 47 off 33 by the skipper and 36 off 28 by Bairstow. Thus, the match went in the super over where Ferguson again did the job for his team as he took two wickets to end SRH’s innings. KKR only had to chase down three runs off the last six balls. Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik successfully scored three runs off Rashid Khan in the one-over eliminator.
