IPL 2020: Suryakumar Yadav sacrifices his wicket for MI skipper Rohit Sharma after a mix-up against DC
It was a selfless gesture from Suryakumar Yadav.
Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) locked horns against each other on Tuesday in the mega final of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was the sixth final for the defending champions while the Capitals had made it to the title clash for the first time in 13 years. After winning the toss, the Shreyas Iyer-led side opted to bat first and posted a formidable 156 runs on the board after 20 overs.
MI needed a decent start to get over the line chasing a tricky target and they got one thanks to Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock. But the latter got out in the 5th over only to bring Suryakumar Yadav in. He along with Rohit stitched a brilliant partnership to keep the team ahead in the game.
But when Rohit Sharma is in the middle, there is always a possibility of the run-out thanks to his reputation. And once again in the 11th over, the same came to the fore to allow the opposition to make a comeback. Rohit punched the fifth ball of the over off the backfoot and set off for the run.
Suryakumar Yadav’s presence of mind
However, Suryakumar Yadav was watching the ball and was adamant that there was no run. At the same time, his skipper reached his end almost. Meanwhile, Praveen Dubey got to the ball and threw it to the striker’s end to affect the run-out. DC would’ve dreamt of getting MI captain’s wicket but this is when Surya brought his selfless nature to the fore.
Understanding the importance of the game and the wicket, he decided to sacrifice his wicket. He came out of the crease as soon as Rohit Sharma reached close to him and gave away his wicket to make sure a set batsman stays out in the middle. The selfless nature from Suryakumar Yadav won the hearts of everyone and his teammates also applauded him for his gesture.
At the other end, Rohit Sharma understood that he made a mistake and shouldn’t have gone for a run with his partner not running and regretted his decision. Surya was set after scoring 19 runs but an unfortunate mix-up led to his dismissal.
