After leaving his mark against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2020 season-opener, Sam Curran had a high-impact outing against Rajasthan Royals too. CSK lost the encounter by 16 runs but Sam Curran managed to notch up an individual performance in both the departments.
He emerged as the most successful bowler of the match after scalping three wickets in his spell while conceding 33 runs. In the batting department, Sam tried to save CSK’s sinking ship by smashing a couple of sixes. However, the soaring run-rate eventually led to the end of his transitory 6-ball 17.
One of the highlights of the match was Sam bowling to his brother Tom in the first innings. After playing together for England and Surrey, the Curran brothers battled it out for the first time in cricket. It all happened in the penultimate over of the first innings when Sam was brought into the attack by CSK skipper Dhoni.
I was disappointed I didn’t hit sixes: Tom Curran
On the second delivery of the over, Sam dismissed Kedar Jadhav, who tried to hit it over mid-wicket but didn’t clear the rope. The batsmen had crossed and the world witnessed ‘Tom vs Sam’ encounter for the first time. Sam bowled a yorker but Tom, who must’ve faced the delivery countless times in the past, jammed it down the third man region for a boundary.
After the match, Tom revealed what was going through his head while facing his younger brother. He was planning to hit a couple of sixes against Sam but was unable to do so. “I would have liked to put him into the stands for a couple, to be honest. I was disappointed I didn’t,” said Tom.
On the back of Rajasthan’s impressive batting display, they set a challenging 216-run target for CSK. Responding to the climbing required run-rate, the Chennai side eventually fizzled out on 200, handing a 16-run victory to the Royals. Faf du Plessis did provide CSK with some resistance but he eventually departed after scoring 72.
After registering an impressive victory in their first game, Steve Smith-led RR will now lock horns with Kings XI Punjab on September 27 in Sharjah.
