IPL 2021: Vijay Shankar not eyeing a comeback into the Indian team

With the vast talent that the Indian cricketing circuit produces, the careers of cricketers become as much about surviving in the competitive world as about performing for the team. Once elected over Ambati Rayudu in the 2019 World Cup squad due to his all-around abilities, Vijay Shankar lost his place in the Indian team after a dip in form.

The 30-year-old has been a regular face in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is currently plying his trade for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Shankar did not have much to do in his team’s opening game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as he could manage only 11 runs from seven deliveries, while with the ball, he bowled a single over for 14 runs.

Having come into international cricket at the age of 27, Shankar would have wanted to stay inside the team for as long as possible, although it seems that the Tamil Nadu batsman has his priorities set for now and he is looking to “enjoy the game”.

Not thinking about an India comeback: Vijay Shankar

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo ahead of the IPL, Shankar clarified that he is “not thinking about making an India comeback”. “Going into the IPL, has the thought of making an India comeback crossed your mind?” he was asked.

“I am not thinking about doing extraordinary stuff or making a comeback. It is about enjoying myself. I started playing this game because I love it. If I enjoy the game and take things as they come, I think I will be in much better mental space”, Shankar responded.

“Sometimes when I am idle in my room, I watch my own videos [of old innings]. As a player, you will want to push yourself for a comeback, but I want to do it the other way. I don’t want to put myself under pressure to perform or get back into the Indian team. I just want to enjoy the game and I feel I’ve done really well when I’ve enjoyed every small thing I do. The end result will take care of itself. So, whatever happens, I’m ready to take it”, he added.
