IPL 2022: 5 retained players who could have been bought at a lower price in mega auction

The governing council of the Indian Premier League made the eight existing teams mention their retained players on the 30th of November. BCCI already gave the salary cap of each player according to the number of retentions a team decides to make. As the rules were already framed, the teams had to plan and calculate accordingly. A total of 27 players have been retained by the eight teams. Some teams had to fit the spots based on the regulations and have given excessive prices than the player deserved. Here are 5 players who could have been bought at a lower price in the mega auction: 1. Mayank Agarwal Mayank Agarwal. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mayank Agarwal, the opening batter of Punjab Kings, has been retained as the first player for an amount of INR 14 crores. He has been playing the IPL since 2011. w, and was signed by Punjab Kings in 2018 for a salary of 1 crore. His batting stats for Punjab steadily increased. In 2018, he averaged just 12 and his strike rate was 127.65. His average and strike rates improved to 38.54 and 156.45 respectively in 2020. He averaged 40.09 in the 2021’s season. Hence, it is evident from his batting records. His overall average for the Punjab Kings stands at 28.02. Agarwal has been a much-improved cricketer in recent times, but he has not done much for his exponential generous growth of salary. It is cent percent sure that he would have not got this whopping salary if he had been in the auction. 2. Axar Patel Axar Patel. The slow-left-arm-orthodox bowling all-rounder has been a part of the Indian Premier League since 2013 but debuted for King XI Punjab in 2014. He was the sole retention of the Punjab franchise in 2018’s mega auction. After an average season in 2018, he was traded to Delhi Capitals for the 12th edition. This southpaw has been a part of Delhi Capital’s side for three years. The 31-year-old player has played 109 IPL matches and has taken 95 wickets and scored 953 runs with a career strike rate of 125.22. Patel has been retained for an amount of INR 9 crores by Delhi Capitals, which is excess for a player like him as he is just an economical bowler and not an extensive wicket-taker. He might have gone for a lesser price in the auction. 3. Abdul Samad Abdul Samad. (Photo Source: Twitter) Abdul Samad is an interesting prospect from the territory of Kashmir, and has become a talking point after his retention by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The 20-year-old middle-order batter can also bowl some leg spin. Samad has been playing the league for two years. He was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2020’s season. The youngster showcased his hard-hitting capability in the first few matches itself and had an average and strike rate of 22.5 and 170.06 respectively. He has played 23 IPL matches and has scored 111 runs each in both seasons. The explosive batter has an impressive career strike rate of 146.05. He has the highest score of 33 and is yet to make an impact. But he was retained for a sum of INR 4 crores in the auction ahead of their star powers. Being an uncapped player and considering his performances, he would have got only a lesser price in the auction. 4. Mohammed Siraj Mohammed Siraj. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mohammed Siraj is the recently blossomed player of the Indian contingent. His life changed after he was picked by the stalwart Virat Kohli in Royal Challenger’s Bangalore squad in 2018. Step by step, Siraj has improved and emerged to be their key-bowler. He has been retained by RCB ahead of their star performer Harshal Patel for a price of INR 7 crores. The pacer debuted for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017 and was signed by Bangalore later. He was an expensive bowler and didn’t take many wickets at first. His economy improved year by year and it went from 9.55 in 2019 to 6.78 in 2021. In 50 IPL matches, he has grabbed 50 wickets and has an average of 28.74. The 27-year-old player became the first bowler to bowl back-to-back maiden overs in the history of IPL in 2020 and he also took a hat-trick that season. He climbed through the ladder and went on to represent the Indian team. But considering his wicket-taking abilities, he is lagging at that part and hence he could have been bought in the auction for a lesser price. 5. Umran Malik Umran Malik. He is also a Kashmiri player to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad after Abdul Samad. The novice player has been retained for a whopping INR 4 crores and has just played three IPL matches. Malik grabbed headlines in the last few league matches of the 14th edition of IPL as he clocked the fastest ball of 153 Kmph by an Indian bowler in the IPL. He has retained ahead of the fellow experienced bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The 22-year-old player has not made an impact on the team except bowling the fastest ball in the league. He has an economy of 8.0 and has just two wickets under his sleeves. Most probably he would have not got this salary if he had gone to the auctions.
