IPL 2022: 5 teams that might eye Ravi Shastri for head coach role

Ravi Shastri, the former Indian cricketer, has emerged as one of the best coaches in the history of the Indian Cricket team. His records as a coach speak for himself. His contributions to this sport from being a player to a commentator to a director and a coach have been massive. Shastri was given the responsibility of the head coach in 2017, and his contract was extended in 2019 for another two years. Under him, the team achieved various feats. He has coached the Indian T20I side for 65 matches out of which 42 have been in India’s favour and it makes him the most successful coach of the team. His coaching tenure got to an end after the T20 World Cup which didn’t end in the favour of the Indian team. And now, all the IPL teams are keen to pick this big man to manage and coach their side. Many IPL teams require a coach and there is no doubt that Ravi Shastri will be the hot pick among the contenders. 1. Ahmedabad Motera Cricket Stadium. One of the new teams to feature in this season’s IPL is CVC Capital’s unnamed Ahmedabad team. This new franchise is yet to announce its head coach. As this fresh team would like to start along with some well-known and famed personalities with good management and coaching skills, Ahemedabad franchise could hire the former Indian coach for this position. According to the unofficial sources, the management has already approached the star coach to lead their side off-field. In case Shastri makes it to the team, there would be a lot of expectations on this person to see his approach in this franchisee cricket. 2. Lucknow Ekana International Cricket Stadium. (Photo Source: Twitter) The second team to make a debut in the 15th edition of IPL is Lucknow, which was bought by RPSG groups for a whopping amount of 7090 crores. The management already has experience of owning the dissolved Rising Pune Supergiants team. The RPS management had Stephen Fleming as their head coach in the two seasons they appeared. But now, the chances of Fleming to coach a team other than CSK is very minute. Hence, the management would lookout for an experienced and well-proven candidate. The management will be keen to build a high-quality team culture from the beginning. And so, Ravi Shastri could be the apt person to build the team with strong core players who would be in the team for the next few seasons. 3. Punjab Kings Punjab Kings. One of the main reasons the team has not been consistent is their frequent changes in their captains and coaches. This team has been coached by the stars of cricket, such as Tom Moody, Michael Bevan, Adam Gilchrist, Darren Lehmann, Sanjay Bangar, Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge, Mike Hesson, and Anil Kumble formerly. Even though the team has tried nine different coaches, it has not lifted the trophy even once. The team would now at least look to keep their managing and playing core sides consistent for the future, to get better stable results. Ravi Shastri would have been in the minds of the owners to carry their side to the maiden victory. 4. Rajasthan Royals Rajasthan Royals Celebrating. The team has been in the second half of the points table for the most number of times and has qualified only thrice after their first season. Royals have been trying different strategies to qualify for the playoffs but nothing has yet worked for them. Despite appointing the Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara as the Director of Cricket Operations, they did not perform any special. The team has been relying much on their foreign assets over the years and hence, if an Indian coach like Ravi Shastri steps into the team, he can change that scenario by aiding the youths of this nation to perform well on the big stage. 5. Sunrisers Hyderabad Sunrisers Hyderabad. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Sunrisers Hyderabad had a horrible season in this year of IPL as they finished the league at the bottom of the points table. The management made some weird decisions by axing their most successful captain David Warner in the middle of the season. The captaincy was shifted to Kane Williamson and that didn’t reverse the situation of the team. The team was performing well under the coaching of Tom Moody since 2013, and he assisted the team to four playoffs and a triumph in 2016. But the management dropped him and appointed Trevor Bayliss as their head coach in 2020. The team just managed to get into the playoffs that year and in 2021, the team was the least performing in the tournament. It is lucid that the team management has been in unsettledt and it can be rectified if a coach like Shastri comes in.
