IPL 2022: Deepak Chahar bags more salary than MS Dhoni, Ishan Kishan becomes MI’s most-expensive buy at auction
Day 1 of the auction has seen some high-octane bidding from various franchises.
The mega auction for the upcoming IPL 2022 got underway today (February 12) in Bengaluru and the whole cricketing world was on the edge of their seats. While some of them were the players who were are versed with the dynamics of IPL, others were the fans who were keen to know whether their favorite players would be brought back by their previous franchises or whether they would find a new team for the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, Day 1 of the auction saw some high-octane bidding from various franchises. While the eight exisiting sides were allowed to retain a maximum of just four players, the two new franchises – Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat – picked 3 players each from the draft. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings broke the bank for Ishan Kishan and Deepak Chahar respectively
Mumbai Indians- the most successful side in the competition’s history, have won the title five times. Headed by their skipper Rohit Sharma, the franchise entered the auctions with an available purse of INR 48 crore. Mumbai Indians retained their captain Rohit Sharma for Rs 16 crore while they paid Rs 12 crore for Jasprit Bumrah and INR 8 crore for Suyrakumr Yadav and INR 6 crore for Kieron Pollard.
The Mumbai franchise arguably has a much stronger core than other teams going around. The Mumbai management did not waste time and started to bid as soon as Ishan Kishan’s name popped up. Following a heated bidding battle with three franchises, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, The Mumbai-based team bought him for a huge sum of INR 15.25 crore, making the wicketkeeper batter the second-highest Indian buy at the auction after former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. in 2015, the former Indian all-rounder was brought for a massive INR 16 crore by the then Delhi Daredevils in 2015.
On the other hand, the Chennai Super Kings, the second-most successful franchise after the Mumbai Indians broke their bank for Indian bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar. The Super Kings have won the title four times. CSK didn’t initially go for Chahar.
They entered the bid at INR 11 Crores and following a heated bidding war with the Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, CSK brought back the 29-year-old at a huge sum of INR 14 crore, making him the second most expensive buy in the auction this year up till now. Interestingly Chahar has been paid INR 2 crore more than what they paid to retain their skipper M.S. Dhoni. The fast-bowling all-rounder also became the franchise’s most expensive by at the auction.
